Why we recommend this

Peter Coulson is an established fashion and beauty photographer whose teaching places strong emphasis on natural posing, movement and the feeling behind an expression. Rather than simply copying a pose, the goal is to understand how small changes in attitude, body language and emotion affect what the camera sees.

For developing models, facial expression is just as important as posture. A strong portfolio should show more than one look: it should demonstrate that you can respond to direction and communicate different moods without forcing an expression.

What to pay attention to while watching

  • How the photographer communicates with the model and builds a relaxed environment.
  • The difference between a posed facial expression and one that feels natural.
  • How subtle adjustments in head position, eyes, jaw and body language can change a photograph.
  • How movement and emotion can help produce variety rather than repeating the same face.

Your practice exercise

After watching, spend 10 minutes practising in front of a mirror or phone camera. Start with a relaxed, neutral expression. Move gradually through thoughtful, confident, warm and playful moods. Make small changes instead of exaggerating each expression. Then review your images: which expressions feel believable, and which look forced?

Your Model Hub takeaway

You do not need to master every expression immediately. The objective is to become aware of your face, build confidence and learn to take direction. Bring one observation and one question from the video to your next portfolio session or review.

Note: This is a guided viewing exercise. The linked video has not been fully reviewed for a scene-by-scene analysis; the learning points are based on Coulson’s published posing approach.
